Makoto is a character in the movie, Bubble.
While studying the Bubble Phenomenon in the restricted area surrounding Tokyo Tower, Makoto and the Blue Blazes come into contact with Uta, a girl with mysterious connections to the bubbles. She was born on March 28th.
History[]
Makoto is first seen while overlooking the Blue Blaze's tournament against the other teams, and is shocked to see when Usagi nearly falls into a Rift. Concerned and wanting to go help, she is held back by Shin as Hibiki jumps in to assist.
Makoto is noted to have a slight crush on Hibiki and Shin, and a glimpse of her pining over them is shown multiple times.
She is also worried when Hibiki doesn't return after running off towards Tokyo Tower, and welcomes him back, with the shock that there is a girl with him: Uta. While suspicious, she also quickly bonds with Uta, though she finds her unusual, and she teaches her what books are and how to read. Uta is quickly enchanted and develops a sisterly bond with Makoto, who shows er the tragic tale of the Little Mermaid.
While witnessing a tournament held by the Undertakers, she scowls at their unsportsmanlike behavior and reaches out to assist the losing squad. After returning to the Reiko., she notices that bubble activity is starting up again, and realizes that the trouble began when Uta arrived on the ship. While going above deck, she is suddenly attacked by the Undertakers, who use her as leverage to get the Blue Blazes to compete against them to get her back.
While being suspended above a rift, she continues to yell; not in fear, but in anger, and berates the Undertakers for capturing her. The team, worried for her, agrees to go up against the Undertakers and nearly fail before gaining the upper hand thanks to Hibiki and Uta teaming up. The Blue Blazes is victorious and continue to advance towards Makoto, who is glad to see the team. Makoto leaps down and gleefully embraces Hibiki.
During a small celebration, Makoto and the Blue Blazes, including other teams who join in, share a toast. Makoto takes part in some drinking.
When Hibiki suddenly disappears, along with Uta, who go to Tokyo Tower, she urges Shin to go and help them, and watches in terror as Tokyo Tower is engulfed in a Rift. Hibiki returns to the Reiko, alone, and without bubble activity, She rushes to find Uta gone, and begins to break down in tears.
During the end credits, Makoto and the team look on as the rest of Tokyo begins to be rebuilt.
Appearance[]
Makoto has Brown chestnut hair tied into a ponytail on the right side of her head, while wearing rimmed, red glasses that often sit at the bridge of her nose. Makoto has a fairly curvy build with a sizeable bust that is accentuated by her posture while on the computer. She has light grayish-blue eyes and is portrayed as wearing a mustard yellow hoodie with a white lab coat, a teal skirt and white sneakers with pink accents. At night, Makoto wears a long pink nightgown. She is also, despite her profession, seen constantly drinking and carrying around a can of beer.
Personality[]
Makoto is very headstrong and independent. She is shown to constantly rebuff men's advances on her, and is not one to be called a damsel in distress. She has held her own in a boat full of guys, and is delighted to find another girl in the area surrounding Tokyo Tower.
Despite being portrayed as independent, Makoto has also been shown to be very vulnerable and reliant on alcohol. She can also be stubborn and teasing, which often shows when she is intoxicated. However, despite this facade, she also has a great, kind heart, almost immediately welcoming Uta in despite her own jealously over her relationship with Hibiki and suspicion surrounding Uta's origins.
Abilities[]
Genius Intellect: Makoto is shown to be very smart and headstrong, though she lacks physical strength or prowess like the Blue Blazes. She also studies the Bubble Phenomenon after being welcomed onto the Reiko, and has a space on the ship for studying the bubbles.
Relationships[]
Uta: Her relationship with Uta is noted to be incredibly strong, even though they had just met, and the two are seen reading books together and bonding over the story of the Little Mermaid. Through this, she also inadvertently helps Uta realize that she has feelings for Hibiki, therefore unwittingly bringing them closer together. Makoto was devastated to tears when she found out Uta had perished.
Hibiki: It is difficult to describe her relationship with Hibiki; as their interactions are very limited throughout the film. At times Makoto acts like a surrogate older sister to Hibiki whenever he goes out on the deck of the ship to brood. In a memory flash, it is shown that Makoto gives him haircuts on occasion. However, she also harors a slight crush on Hibiki, admiring him from afar and praising him from the sidelines.
Shin: Makoto's interactions with Shin are much more frequent; they share a lot of moments together, and Makoto also harbors unrequited feelings for Shin. She looks up to him, and he collaborates with her on researching bubble activity, bringing the two closer together while also looking out for the rest of the Blue Blazes.
